Housing Week

It's that time of year and some of you will be looking to sign a contract on a house for next year, but...

Before you do anything make sure you sign up to one of our Housing Workshops where we'll be giving you some handy tips on how to 'Make a house, YOUR Home'.

Renting in the private sector after a relatively simple system in halls can be tricky and we want to ensure that you have all the information you need to try and make the process as smooth as possible.

These fun and interactive 60 minute workshops will be focussed around giving you handy house hunting tips and making sure you are clued up about your rights and responsibilities as a tenant as well as dishing you a bit of info around what to expect from a landlord.

We are running workshops every day throughout Housing Week to ensure that no one needs to miss out...to book you simply need to hit the button below and tell us which session you would like to attend!

Sessions will be running at the following times:

  • Monday 5th December 5pm - 6pm

The Housing Fair is on 8th December (12:00 – 14:00) in the Hub. You’ll be able to get your hands on the official off-campus housing list as well as get advice from representatives from the police, fire service and much more. The housing list is a selection of off-campus properties that have registered with the Student Services Accommodation Team

The Students' Union Advice Centre will be available at the Housing Fair to answer all your accommodation related questions. We can give you all the information you need to know about contracts, deposits, inventories and what to look out for when renting in the private sector! Plus...if you already have a contract but want it checked over first, then bring us a copy and we can check this for you- before you sign!

So Remember…

  • Wait until the off-campus housing list is released on 8th December and don’t sign up for a property before then.
  • Allow yourself plenty of time – don’t take the first house you see.
  • Be patient. Don’t let your fellow house-hunters rush you just because they don’t want to look anymore.
  • Ensure you have a clear understanding of the contract you are about to sign, particularly with regard to rent, bills, deposit and whether there is a summer retainer.
  • Ensure you view the property first before you sign a contract.
  • Make sure you get a copy of the contract after you have signed it.

Don't forget to download our handy house hunting guide before you go to any viewings. Print this off and take it along, filling out the checklist for each property you view as you go. This will then enable you to sit down and way up the pros and cons of each property you view before making a decision on which one to go with!
