Ask for Johnny: Free condoms for Edge Hill students

Hand holding a blue condom packet in palm. Text reads: Ask For Johnny Condom Cupboard: Free condoms for Edge Hill students.

Can I speak to Johnny please?

If you've ever found yourself without protection, Edge Hill Students' Union is here to help. We've launched our new Ask For Johnny scheme, providing free condoms for Edge Hill students.

As the cost of living rises, we're making sure you can still access essential products to protect your sexual health.

Getting your hands on free condoms is easy. If you're at the bar, simply approach a member of bar staff and ask: "Can I speak to Johnny?". Then, we'll hand you a discreet packet of regular or latex-free condoms. Simple!

You can also pick up a packet of condoms from our condom cupboard upstairs in the Hub outside the Advice Team offices. All packaging is discreet, so you don't have to worry about walking across campus with condoms on display.

We currently stock:

  • Regular latex Pasante condoms
  • Latex-free Skyn condoms

Doreen Morrin, Health, Social Care & Medicine President, said: "Condoms are a basic health protection measure everyone should have access to. The easier we make access to them the easier it is to protect yourself. This project was designed to remove some of the known barriers to healthcare, including costs and stigma.

"Young people aged 18-24 are the most at-risk group for unwanted pregnancies sexually transmitted infections such as herpes and gonorrhea. Dealing with those issues be a huge strain on your mental and physical health, which in turn could impact your university studies. For the sake of your health, it's always best to use protection.

"We named this campaign Ask For Johnny to make students feel more comfortable about asking for condoms. Just like the Ask For Angela safety scheme, students can approach a member of staff and use the phrase as a codeword. We hope this helps break down the stigma of sexual health and contraception."

Our Ask For Johnny scheme is now on a limited trial for the 2022/2023 academic year.
