Edge Hill Students’ Union is delighted to welcome its new officer team: Kathryn Murphy as the new Faculty of Education Student Engagement Officer; Georgia Whalley-Smith as the new Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine Student Engagement Officer; and Rhiannon Muise as the new Faculty of Arts and Sciences Student Engagement Officer. The team took up their new roles on Thursday 01 July and will remain in post for at least one year.
Following a cross-campus election in March 2021, Edge Hill Students’ Union’s new officer team comprises of three full-time officers in faculty-based roles.
The roles will have specific remits including supporting students’ academic careers, providing welfare and activity-based support, and campaigning on issues that affect students most during the 2021-2022 academic year.
Of being elected into her role, the new Faculty of Education Officer, Kathryn Murphy, said, ‘I am super excited about working alongside my amazing EHYou team, and I am so proud we were all elected. Some of my main goals this year are to increase the accessibility on campus for visually impaired students, create more opportunities for socialising safely following the pandemic, and improve transparency of the SU and what we get up to.’
The new Faculty of Health, Social Care, and Medicine Education Officer, Georgia Whalley-smith, said, ‘Over the next year, I’m really excited to work with the team to welcome students back to campus and beginning our campaign work to make sure students have the most fulfilling year!’
The new Faculty of Arts and Sciences Officer, Rhiannon Muise, said, ‘I am really excited to meet new students, have the opportunity to promote student voices, and encourage students to use theirs when it comes to their educational needs. I am extremely passionate about promoting the creative arts subjects to show that arts are viable and are most certainly needed.’
Officers are elected into full-time roles as part of an annual cross-campus election organised by the Students’ Union. All officers are elected by students on the basis of their manifestos and campaigning efforts.
This year, the student officer positions changed from remit-based to faculty-based roles. This is to allow officers to address the concerns of students in each faculty directly. Each officer was also required to have come from their respective faculty in order to give them an understanding of some of the key challenges the Students’ Union will face over the next academic year.
The officer team will now begin a one-month period of induction sessions, after which they will begin their front-facing work supporting students on campus.
Information about contacting your new student officer team will be disseminated by the Students’ Union following their early inductions. In the meantime, follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to keep up to date with their work.
