Everything you need to know about being SU President | Joe Bradford

Hello Edge Hill Students!

As your outgoing SU President, I’m here to tell you a little about the role, and why you should consider applying for it.

The position is split into various key responsibilities (mentioned in the job description) alongside lots of little day-to-day tasks, meeting students and societies.

The main areas for me are Governance, Democracy and Union Development. Then there are committees which need student or SU representation and other responsibilities that need student consultation and involvement. Although it is recommended that you have things on your manifesto which contribute to these areas, you can put things on it which you think the SU need to look into to better benefit Edge Hill students.

So, as a few examples…

Key responsibilities:

  • Chairing the board of trustees to allow key decision making within the SU.
  • Working with the CEO of the SU to focus on SU development and a future strategic plan.
  • Working on different ways to best engage the students in the democratic processes of the union. For example, student council and AMM.
  • Being a member of the university board of governors which involves constructively criticising and voting on university plans, so they are always reflective of student needs and have student values at the heart of their decision making.

Then your smaller responsibilities might consist of

  • Manifesto pledges (like putting on the first Edge Hill Winter Ball!)
  • Student Opportunity panels
  • Malpractice panels
  • Welcome talks and meeting amazing Edge Hill students!
  • NSS, SLSA, SU wins and SU update lectures/ shout outs.

What have I learned, and what will I take away from my position?

So much!

I would say I have learned a lot about the things specifically within my role as the president. For example, the fundamentals of democracy, governance and union development.

There is also, the ability to have the confidence and resilience, to give things a go, and to excel in social situation, even those where there are hundreds of students vying for attention – lecture talks were daunting at first, but soon became part of my routine.

On top of this, I have really seen the effects of good and bad teamwork and how it pays to invest in team building activities!

How has my position benefitted me, both personally and professionally?

As previously stated, my communication skills have improved, as has my confidence and my view of what makes a successful business and team.

Anyone nominating themselves should be prepared for a varied, challenging, but at all times entertaining role!

Why should people run for my position?

There’s lots to learn, lots to change, and lots to leave behind!

You will start learning things on day one, and basically everything I have mentioned above will be a learning curve, but in the best possible way!

There are things to change in the institution and the union and you can be at the forefront of that change in a way that best reflects the views of the students at EHU.

And finally, if things are successful and are implemented through correct student consultation, there is huge opportunity to leave a part of what you did behind. The potential to make a lasting mark on Edge Hill is really within your grasp.
