Intro to VP Activities: My Day to Day

The role of Student Activities is fundamental to the university experience of over 15,000 students.

Directly working with societies, sports clubsSU events (both day time & evening) as well as running campaigns such as Give It A Go, Sustainability, and InclusActivity, you’ll never have a dull day!

Working with the phenomenal engagement team, you’ll be meeting new students each and every day of the week. You’ll have the ability to reach on campus and off campus students, putting their ideas forwards for what events and campaigns they want you to undertake.

After that, it’s up to you and the team to see how best you can make it work!

Other elements of the role include:

  • Sitting on boards representing the student voice
  • Carrying out academic appeals / malpractice panels where we try help students who run into issues on their course.

It’s important to make sure to know that this role is for you, you’ll rarely have a night out or stroll along campus without questions on what events are happening next. That being said, I have loved helping create and connect students to all the brilliant things that Edge Hill Students’ Union and the University are doing.

The Takeaway

As the months close in, I am beginning to think of future careers, and have started to consider what I have learnt within my role.

The ability to create working relationships between university departments, student groups, and external organisations is a big help. You simply can’t do this job on your own, and you will need all the help you can get (which is no bad thing!) to make your events and campaigns as successful as they can be.

Personal & Professional development

The ability to create and connect events within the Give It A Go! programme helped develop my passion for working with students. Seeing how something as small as a trip off campus can create lasting memories really hit home, and it would be great to see how I can work on projects in the future that help in the same way.

Having taken on a variety of responsibilities at national level, I have also seen the varying levels of impact that one voice can have.

Why Run?

A couple of years ago I saw the opportunity to make a difference. To put my university experience to the test and see how I could try to shape what students wanted.

Unlike a lot of graduate roles and job positions, a full-time officer role allows you to rise to the top of an organisation overnight. Making changes from the top down rather than being a small cog in a large machine.

As an undergraduate, I had built links with the University working for nine different departments, setting up two societies and competing for two teams, so I felt that I was ready to make the jump.

The role is what you make of it, but I’d always suggest having a well-rounded view so that you are able to help as many students as possible, and not just a small group.

Like any job, you’ll have highs & lows but one thing that I can guarantee is the feeling of achievement when bringing groups of students together who may never have met before.
