This week marks our very first Sustainability Week Campaign: THINK TWICE!
I tasked myself at the start of the year to challenge students’ and the university’s outlook on sustainability. I constantly found myself saying, “no, it’s not just recycling!”
Back in October, I asked students to vote for what sustainability goals they wanted the SU to focus on, using the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

Working with this information, we’ve created a week of events designed to engage students with the topic of sustainability.
Monday: THINK Upcycle
- Crafternoon 12-2pm & 5-6pm in the hub creating pillows from Jeans & Edge Hill Kit (among other clothes), repurposing picture frames & reusing tin cans. Head to https://www.edgehillsu.org.uk/giag for more information.
- At Monday lunch time, I will be launching an Eco Lounge in the Hub. Think vines, beanbags, smoothies and even a hammock. You’ll have the chance to find out a little more about sustainability at Edge Hill University whilst enjoying the relaxing space in the Hub.
Tuesday: THINK Switch Off
- In collaboration with the University, we are launching a competition for students to design a sticker that will be used across campus encouraging students and staff to SWITCH OFF lights and other electrical items. The winning design will win a £150 voucher, with prizes also awarded for the second and third place designs!
- On Tuesday evening, I will be hosting a Campfire and Marshmallow event, encouraging students to appreciate the outdoor world and draw attention to some of the green zones/ conversation efforts going on in the area: https://www.facebook.com/events/1482227668571777/?notif_t=plan_user_associated¬if_id=1519394632012431
Wednesday: THINK Green
- At a Green themed social in the Venue from 9pm, we will be launching “The Last Straw,” a campaign to use environmentally friendly compostable straws on campus.
- We will also be letting you know of the developments of our work with catering this year on cutlery, cups and containers. There will be trays upstairs throughout the week to encourage the correct disposal of cutlery, depending on whether it is plastic or metal.

Thursday: THINK Health
THINK HEALTH is about encouraging students to consider their physical and mental health.
- Crafternoon session Sunflower planting, pot decorating & creating bird feeders 12-2pm & 5-6pm in the Hub.
- Allotment tours 2-3pm, setting off by the SU stand in the HUB.
- Free Ben & Jerry’s & Popcorn film night showing of the Lorax at 6pm top floor Hub big screen.
Saturday: THINK World
- Small changes to your everyday lifestyle can have a big impact, in the community and the world. With that in mind, we’ll be working with the community to do an Ormskirk Clean-up.
So there we have a weeks’ worth of events to show you that sustainability can be fun. All it takes throughout your day to day schedule is a moment to Think Twice!
We will also have a variety of other sustainability themed events that we will be launching throughout the remainder of the year, so keep an eye out for them!
