Reporting Hate Crimes or Instances of Discrimination

Internally

Edge Hill University has a bullying/harassment and hate crime policy which can be found here.

This policy gives definitions for bullying harassment and hate crimes and also gives advice and guidance about how students can try to resolve or report any instances.

Essentially, if there is a hate crime /bullying/ harassment issue that cannot be resolved informally, students can report a student (or staff member) via the university Disciplinary Procedures by reporting the incident(s) to Campus Life to instigate an investigation.

If you would like support with:

  • Drafting/reviewing a report statement
  • Obtaining evidence
  • Attending meetings with Campus life
  • Support at any resulting panel(s)
  • Advice about the procedures

The SU advice team are able to provide independent and impartial advice and support.

Externally

The SU advice team can report Hate Crimes externally to the Police either on your behalf or can advise you of the steps you can take to report yourself.

Advisers and students can report Hate Crimes (online) here.

There is also a list of Hate Crime reporting centres here.

Again, we can help with reviewing statements and evidence.

We will be looking into having the SU advice team being trained in regard to hate crime reporting and to also seek to have our Hate Crime Reporting centre status reinstated in the coming year once recruitment for a new adviser is completed.

If you would like to speak to an SU adviser about a Hate Crime incident, please book an appointment here.

If students are looking to enquire whether the Students’ Union can do any campaigns about Hate Crimes, Prejudice, Diversity, Racism or discrimination then they should request to speak to the SU elected officers by contacting the engagement team SUengagement@edgehill.ac.uk.
